• Fellowes

  A fourth-generation family business that makes workplace products: monitor arms, modular wall systems, air purifiers, markerboards and shredders.

  Bitfield helped Fellowes build the Elixir/Nerves firmware for their Array line of connected air purifiers, bringing their new hardware generation to life. Each unit reads a suite of sensors (CO2, particulates, VOCs, temperature, humidity, pressure and room presence) and uses them to drive its fans, filters, control panel and status lights, easing off when a room is empty. Every purifier stays in sync with the cloud over cellular, so a whole fleet can be monitored, controlled and updated remotely.

• ROAR for Good

  A staff duress platform that protects frontline workers with panic buttons, a mobile app and a proprietary Bluetooth mesh network that works without Wi-Fi.

  For three years, Bitfield acted as interim CTO, working on every part of the product: website, mobile apps, installation support, firmware, and architecture design. We interviewed, led, and mentored the development team.

  The system spanned many hundreds of Nerves gateways and tens of thousands of nodes on ROAR’s Bluetooth mesh, across hundreds of hotels and hospitals.

• UN Global Compact

  A UN initiative for corporate sustainability. Over 25,000 participants in 160+ countries commit to its Ten Principles and align their operations with the Sustainable Development Goals.

  Bitfield acted as the UNGC’s Ruby on Rails vendor of record, building, maintaining, and modernizing the application for many years.

• 7shifts

  A team management platform for restaurants, covering scheduling, hiring, training, payroll and engagement.

  Bitfield helped 7shifts decide how to bring time punching to their point-of-sale partners’ iOS, Android and Windows devices without building everything three times. We prototyped the leading cross-platform approaches, weighed each against user experience, team skills and long-term maintenance, and delivered a clear recommendation.

  We also led a research project to bring Casbin, the policy engine behind 7shifts’ access control, to their Android apps. We prototyped several ways to run the same rules on the device as on the server, so permissions stay consistent everywhere.

• OnRout

  A parcel pricing marketplace. Shippers bid dynamically on individual parcels instead of working from flat rate cards, turning carriers’ network efficiencies into savings for shippers.

  Bitfield developed OnRout’s high-performance dynamic pricing marketplace in Elixir.

• Precision Nutrition

  A nutrition coaching and certification company. Certifies fitness professionals and coaches clients directly, and has worked with elite athletes and sports organizations since 2005.

  Bitfield helped Precision Nutrition build out features in their Ruby on Rails monolith, advised on modernizing their tooling after canvassing a dozen stakeholders, and set up the scaffolding for their Salesforce Marketing Cloud integration.

• Crowdmark

  Grading software for online and paper-based assessments, built to help instructors grade faster and give students detailed, personalized feedback.

  Bitfield helped Crowdmark with their group exam feature and Ruby on Rails development.

• Northern Village

  Builds websites and custom software for social impact organizations on its own Web Village platform.

  Bitfield helped Northern Village with their move to Elixir by providing mentoring, guidance, and feature development.

• Teen Legal Helpline

  A charity that gave Ontario teens free access to high-quality legal advice so they could make the best decisions for their lives. The service was free, confidential, anonymous, and answered by experienced lawyers.

  Bitfield built, maintained, and modernized Teen Legal Helpline’s service during their years of operation.

• NobleHour

  A volunteer management platform. Connects people with opportunities, tracks projects and volunteer hours, and generates impact reports for businesses, nonprofits and schools.

  Bitfield built NobleHour’s Android app, working alongside their iOS developer.

• Whiteshark

  A residential window and eavestrough cleaning company serving the Greater Toronto Area since 1991.

  Bitfield mentors Whiteshark’s CEO as he writes his own software for the business while running it.

• Spokehaus

  A boutique spin studio in downtown Toronto.

  Bitfield provided Spokehaus’ initial web booking system built on Mindbody.
